CHARLESTON, S.C. -
In a match that was delayed and eventually shortened due to inclement weather in the Charleston area, Western Carolina’s women’s tennis team (1-10, 0-3 SoCon) fell 4-0 to the Cougars of the College of Charleston (13-4, 5-0 SoCon) on Parent’s Day in Charleston.
With doubles matches underway, lightning halted play an hour in to the match. Play resumed after being moved to the Live To Play Tennis Center across the Cooper River in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. The Cougars doubles teams of Jenny Falcone and Kelly Kambourelis and Grace Baker and Olivia McMillan blanked the Catamounts’ No. 2 and No. 3 teams. With the doubles point in hand for the Cougars, the No. 1 match between WCU’s Ainhoa Iglesias Díaz and Megan McLinden and Charleston’s Samantha Maddox and Irene Viana was stopped with C of C leading 7-2.
Due to the delay, all matches were stopped once College of Charleston clinched the match with four wins. C of C defeated WCU’s No. 4 through No. 6 singles 6-0, 6-0 to win. Western Carolina was down in every other match when play was suspended.
Western Carolina continues Southern Conference action Tuesday as the Catamounts travel to Davidson for a 3:00 pm match against the Wildcats.
