Freshman Stacia Kissell falls to Elon's Jordan Johnston

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina Tennis was defeated 7-0 by Southern Conference opponent Elon on Saturday.

"We knew today was going to be a tough conference match with a nationally ranked SoCon team," said head coach Chris Wollett.

The Phoenix dominated in doubles play, winning both matches. Stacia Kissell and Shannon Bettiol were defeated 8-4 in the No. 1 match, while Nicole Nielly and Sara Ruiz lost 8-2 at the No. 2 position.

In singles play, Bettiol and Nielly showed promise, but fell short of the victory. Bettiol lost in three sets at the No. 4 spot 6-1, 2-6, 6-4, while Nielly was defeated 7-5, 6-4 in the No. 3 match.

Kissell played at the No. 1 spot and fell 6-1, 6-4, while Ruiz was downed at the No. 2 position, 6-2, 6-3. Erin Maguire lost in the No. 5 match 6-1, 6-0.

"Even though we lost all our matches, we are improving as a young team as the season progresses," said Wollett. "I feel our confidence will only increase."
