Western Carolina vs. Evansville - Agate
Western Carolina at Savannah State - Agate
Savannah, Ga. - The Western Carolina women's tennis team split two road matches over spring break this week, falling to the Evansville Purple Aces, 5-2, in Hilton Head, S.C., before downing Savannah State in straight sets, 7-0.
The Catamounts (4-4) did not lose a single game in both singles and doubles competition against Savannah State, sweeping the first through fifth singles seeds with perfect 6-0 scores and downing the Bulldogs doubles squads 8-0. WCU won at No. 6 by default.
Against Evansville, freshmen Tessie Salame and Amanda Massey were the lone Catamounts to score, winning at No. 2 and No. 4 seeds in singles competition. Salame defeated the Purple Aces' Beth Peyton, 7-5, 6-2, while Massey captured back-to-back sets of 6-3 over Allie Cox.
Western returns to action next Thursday, March 15, as it visits mountain-rival, UNC Asheville, at 2:00 pm. The match is a part of the Parkway Series, presented by Arby's, in which Western currently leads 5-2 after the fall seasons. The Catamounts downed the Bulldogs by a 5-2 count a year ago in Cullowhee.
