Cullowhee, N.C. - The Lady Catamount tennis team fought hard, but eventually fell to the West Virginia Mountaineers Saturday afternoon, 6-1. Western Carolina is now 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the SoCon.
After losing the first two doubles matches 8-3 and 8-1, the third seeded team of Katie VanEwyk and Kristin Munn fought back and forth with Courtney Howell and Catherine Koontz, but lost in the end, 9-7.
The Cats' lone point in the match came from sophomore Kristin Cotton, who defeated Koontz; 7-6(4), 6-4. All other singles matches were lost in straight sets with Munn keeping it close at 6-4, 6-3 against Anna Marie Underwood.
WCU is headed for Hilton Head, S.C., for their annual Spring Break Tournament. The team is set to face Evansville on Monday, March 10, at 8:00 am, IUPUI-Fort Wayne at 11:00 am on Tuesday and Northern Kentucky at 8:00 am on Wednesday.
Western returns home on the 21st to host Presbyterian College at 2:30 pm.
