ASHEVILLE, N.C. -
The Western Carolina women's tennis team was defeated by mountain-rival UNC Asheville, 5-2, on Wednesday afternoon in a match originally scheduled for Tuesday which was moved due to inclement weather in the Asheville area.
After being swept in the doubles matches, Western Carolina came out and picked up two singles wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots.
Freshman Stacia Kissell defeated UNCA's Zoe Hamel in the No. 1 singles match by a score of 6-3, 6-1. Kissell tallied her second victory of the season with the win.
The lone Catamount senior - Karen Jiménez - cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 victory over the Bulldogs' Emily McNall at the No. 2 spot. The win gave Jiménez her team-leading third win. UNCA's Erickia Rivero downed Sara Ruiz Pajares 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 3 match with Amryn Soldier defeating WCU's Nicole Nielly 6-0, 6-3.
Shannon Bettiol and Erin Maguire fell in straight sets in the No. 5 and No. 6 matches by scores of 6-4, 6-4 and 6-1, 7-5, respectively.
The Catamounts return to league action this Saturday in Spartanburg as the Purple and Gold takes on Wofford at noon.
