Western Carolina took four singles matches and the double point to down the Mercer Bears, 5-2, Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center.
The Catamounts took an early lead in the match claiming the doubles point. The team of junior Trish Hanson and freshman Tessie Salame edged Mercer's Lauriane Auvergne and Anna Wieslander, 8-6, at number one doubles and juniors Susanna Sjokvist and Mariona Trilla Jane won at number two, 8-5.
In single action, Western Carolina collected wins at No. 1 through No. 4, with Hanson defeating Auvergne, 7-5, 6-3 and Wieslander withdrew at No. 2. Sjokvist claimed a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3 over the Bears Irys Citko. Freshman Amanda Massey rounded out WCU's singles victories by downing Mercer's Priscilla Dias 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 at number four.
Western returns to action March 5-9 in a Spring Tournament in Hilton Head, S.C.
