Western Carolina tennis was defeated 7-0 in today's match against Samford.
"We knew going into the match that Samford was going to be a tough conference match," said head coach Chris Wollet. "Samford's top three played very strong, but I was really proud of how our bottom half played today, especially Nicole Nielly and Shannon Bettiol."
Samford (6-4, 1-0 SoCon) swept the Catamounts in both singles and doubles, winning 7-0. The Catamounts fall to 1-3, 0-2 SoCon.
Emily Mallory defeated Nicole Nielly 6-3, 7-6 (8-3) in the No. 4 set, while Shannon Bettiol was defeated by AnnMarie Lyon 7-5, 6-4 in the No. 5 set.
Bettiol and Nielly were defeated in doubles 8-0 at the No. 1 spot, while WCU's No. 2 and No. 3 matches lost 8-1.
"The girls did a good job creating opportunities, but just weren't able to capitalize," said Wollet. "The girls are looking to improve play against Chattanooga tomorrow"
