Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's tennis team pulled out the 4-3 victory over Gardner-Webb to open their 2003 spring season Tuesday night at the Reid Gym Tennis Courts. The match lasted well into the night hours as junior Kristin Munn defeated Melissa DeJong; 6-4, 6-7, 6-3; to give Western the win.
With juniors Shannon Zalinski and Rocio Perez battling injuries and Gardner-Webb without a sixth player, only two doubles matches were played. Erin Johnson and Kristin Cotton fell to DeJong and teammate Molly Hoeffner, 8-5. Megan Bechtold and Katie VanEwyk battled it out against Lisa Handzus and Lorielle Folita, losing 9-8 with a 9-7 tie-breaker.
In singles play, the Cats got an automatic win since GW was down a player, so Western only needed to win three more singles matches for the win. VanEwyk and Johnson were the first to eliminate their opponents. Cotton fell to Folita and Bechtold dropped her match to Handzus, leaving the outcome of the match to Munn. After a back-and-forth battle that lasted until 8:00 pm, Munn pulled out the win, finishing the last set, 6-3, her largest margin of victory for the night.
The Lady Catamounts travel to Charlotte, N.C., this weekend to take on UNC Charlotte at 1:00 pm on Sunday, Feb. 23.
