Head Coach Christine Hornak Announces 2010 Catamount Softball Schedule

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina Head Softball Coach Christine Hornak announced the 2010 softball schedule today. The Catamounts will be participating in four tournaments to open the 2010 season. Tournament visits include at Georgia State, University of Georgia, North Carolina Central and Georgia Tech's Buzz Classic. Non-conference match-ups with three Southeastern Conference teams that saw action in the NCAA Tournament include College World Series participant Georgia and NCAA Regional attendees Tennessee and Kentucky highlight the season. "Our schedule features a good balance," Hornak said. "It includes top notch programs from the SEC including College World Series participant Georgia and NCAA Regional participants, Tennessee, and Kentucky." Western Carolina opens the 2010 season at the Georgia State Tournament on February 13-14. The Catamounts will play St. Louis, Army and host Georgia State before entering seeded play. The next weekend, WCU plays in the Third Annual Black and Red Challenge, opening with Virginia Tech, a team the club defeated 4-3. The team also faces host Georgia and Winthrop. Between tournament play, Western Carolina will travel to Knoxville, Tennessee to face the University of Tennessee on February 23. WCU will then play in the North Carolina Central Tournament on February 26-27 and at the Buzz Classic, sponsored by Georgia Tech, on March 5-7. Western Carolina will play its first home game of the year on March 13-14 hosting Southern Conference opponent Elon. Other home games include match-ups with conference foes Georgia Southern, Furman, College of Charleston and Samford. Non-conference home games include South Carolina State, Presbyterian, Winston-Salem State and East Tennessee. "We are excited about the challenge we will face in our 2010 game schedule," Hornak admitted "We look forward to the early tournament schedule preparing us to compete for one of four spots in the SOCON Championship Tournament."
The Southern Conference Tournament has been pared down to just four teams for the 2010 season. The highest seed will host the four-team tournament. ![]() |
