CULLOWHEE, N.C. - The Western Carolina University softball team landed 11 current players on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America Scholar-Athlete honors. To be an NFCA Scholar-Athlete, a player must earn a 3.5 or higher GPA over a full academic year.
The players honored by the NFCA include Madison Armstrong (3.97, Health and PE), Courtney Buchanan (3.54, Biology), Emily Castro (3.50, Communications Science Disorders), Abigail Daniels (3.67, Biology), Kassandra Flores (3.88 Biology), Erica Hayes (4.00 Special Education), Ashlyn Long (3.95, Pre-Nutrition), Cheyenne Matthews (3.55, Marketing), Courtney Price (3.75, Business Administration and Law), Shaina Reed (3.86, Communication Science Disorders) and Kara Salvo (3.80, Accounting).
Earlier in the month, the team posted the top NCAA Division I GPA, with a 3.673, in the Easton/NFCA Top 10 Academic Team rankings for the 2016-17 school year. The rankings recognize the academic prowess of softball teams across seven membership divisions.
