CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina softball swept Walters State 10-3, 8-6 Tuesday at the Catamount Softball Complex in its final fall games of the year. The Catamounts ended the fall campaign with a record of 4-2.
Walter's State jumped on the board first in game one when Erica McDonald hit a solo homerun over the left field wall to lead off the third inning. It was the second hit of the game given up by starting pitcher Katie King.
Western Carolina answered with a six-run explosion in the bottom of the third. Senior Mary Leadford led off the inning getting hit by a pitch and then freshman Chelsea Schaffer drew a walk to put runners at first and second. Mollie Fowler made Walters State pay by hitting a three-run bomb over the right field wall. The Catamounts weren't done as junior Danielle Reese hit a single to left field and was sent home off an RBI double by Amber Hawkins. After Beth Hauser drew a walk, Stephanie Beatty hit a two RBI single up the middle to score Hawkins and Hauser.
In the fourth, King was replaced on the mound by sophomore Chere Monday. King ended the game allowing one run on two hits and sitting down the last five batters she faced to take the win. Monday closed out the game allowing two runs on four hits.
In the bottom of the sixth inning a pair of hit by pitches placed Leadford and Schaffer on base and King came back in the lineup to hit a frozen rope through the right side to load the bases. Senior Heather Pritchard hit a grand-slam over the centerfield wall to clear the bases.
In game two, Walters State struck first with a run in the first inning. Western Carolina answered with an RBI single by Hawkins that scored Pritchard. Walters State retook the lead scoring two run in the top of the second and added an additional one in the third.
The Catamounts roared back in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, Monday hit a single past the second baseman and reached second on a Walters State miscue that allowed Pritchard to reach first on a fielder's choice and Schaffer walked to load the bases. Hawkins drew an RBI walk that sent Monday home and then Ross came in to pinch hit and hit a two RBI single to give Western Carolina the lead, 5-4.
Pritchard hit a lead-off double to start the fifth inning and with one out Hawkins drew a walk to place runners on first and third. Hauser hit an RBI single to score Pritchard and Hawkins scored off an RBI single by Beatty.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Reese reached first on an error and then scored off an RBI single by Monday.
Megan Taylor started game two on the mound and went three inning allowing four runs on five hits. Ross replaced her in the fourth inning and picked up the win, allowing four hits on two unearned runs and striking out three.
