Sept. 25, 2008

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina softball defeated Young Harris 11-2 in its fall contest with the Lady Lions Thursday at the Catamount Softball Complex.

Senior hurler Lauren Ross started the game on the mound and picked up the win after going two innings allowing three hits, one run and had two strikeouts. At the plate, Ross went 2-for-2 with two runs, two hits, two RBI and two doubles. She was replaced in the third inning by former Smoky Mountain standout and Cullowhee native Megan Taylor who struck out the first two batters she faced to start the inning.

After being held scoreless in the first inning, Western Carolina exploded for five runs in the second inning. Mollie Fowler drew a walk to start the inning and scored off a double by Ross. A walk by Mary Leadford placed runners on first and second which brought up freshman Katie King who stroked a ball to left field for a two RBI single. Senior Heather Pritchard opened the top of the order with a single and with two outs, sophomore Amber Hawkins hit a two RBI single and was called out at second trying to leg out a double.

The Catamounts added to their lead in the third with Stephanie Beatty hitting a one out single and then moved to second on a passed ball. Fowler drew a walk to put runners at first and second to set up Ross' second RBI double of the game, scoring Beatty. Back-to-back walks by Mary Leadford and Danielle Reese loaded the bases and King also drew a walk which sent home Ross and gave King an RBI.

The fourth inning was another big inning for the Catamounts, tacking on four runs. With one out, Hawkins hit a single past the shortstop and Beth Hauser followed with a single. An RBI single by Beatty scored Hawkins and placed runners on first and second. Fowler strolled to the plate and hit a rocket over the right centerfield wall for a three RBI homerun.

Western Carolina did not get the shut-out yielding two runs to Young Harris. The game was called after five innings.

The second game of the double-header was situational play, putting runners in certain key game situations and working on defensive and offensive plays. Sophomore junior college transfer Chere Monday got the starting nod to start the second game. The Catamounts won the second game 6-4.

Western Carolina will also host a double-header with Walter's State on October 7 beginning at 6 p.m.
