Five Catamounts Softball Players Earn NCCSIA All-State Honors

The five Catamounts selected were the most for the program all-time.

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina put a combined five players on the 2014 University Division All-State Softball team as selected and released by the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA). Freshman Whitney Haywood was a first team selection, at the designated player position, while junior pitcher Jordan Garrett, sophomore Karley Harkey and freshmen Kara Salvo and Courtney Pricewere each named to the second team.

A combined 23 players representing six different universities across North Carolina were honored by the association with the release of its all-state teams. The five Catamounts selected were the most for the program all-time.

Nominees for the annual all-state awards were submitted by North Carolina sports information professionals and voted on by the NCCSIA members.

Haywood, from India Trail, N.C., earned a first team nod at designated player. She saw action, through 2014, in the outfield, second base and the DP spot. She had 14 hits, scored seven runs and knocked in three RBI.

Career strikeout leader Garrett earned her first selection on the NCCSIA team with a second team honor. The Henderson, N.C, native holds the Catamount career record for strikeouts in a career with 534 and also holds the record for strikeouts in a season, set in 2013, with 223. In her junior campaign, Garrett had a 3.07 ERA with 164 strikeouts and a 10-15 record.

Salvo and Price, a pair of Catamount freshmen, who also earned second team All-Southern Conference selections, and named to the SoCon All-Freshman team, were second team selections on the NCCSIA.

Salvo, who proved to be a solid third baseman for the Catamounts, after spending 20 games behind the plate for injured catcher Heather Chastain, led the team with a .311 batting average. She also topped the team in hits (47), RBI (25), homeruns (7) and walks (23). She was also third on the team in doubles (6) and fifth on the team in runs scored (15). Salvo, from Waxhaw, N.C., also led the team in multiple hit games with 14 and had five games where she had three hits. Salvo was also honored with a SoCon Player of the Week accolade.

Price, an outfielder who tied Salvo for the team lead in hits (47), also led the team in doubles with nine. Her .297 batting average was second-best on the team and she also ranked second in homeruns (3) and runs scored (18). The Matthews, N.C. product had 13 multiple hit games and had the second longest hitting streak on the team for the season with eight straight.

Harkey, a sophomore shortstop from Cleveland, N.C, was also a second team selection on the NCCSIA team. She tied the school record for most triples in a season, and in a career, with four, which also led the SoCon. She led the team in runs scored with 19 and was third on the team in RBI with 10. She had 42 hits and three doubles with a .264 batting average. Harkey also had the team's longest hitting streak hitting safely in nine straight games.
