CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Western Carolina sophomore catcher Madison Armstrong has been named to the Southern Conference Championship All-Tournament team. This is the first all-tournament accolade for the Gastonia, N.C. native.
In the three games No. 6 seed Western Carolina played in the 2017 SoCon Championships, Armstrong had a scorching .500 batting average and did not strikeout in 10 at bats. She had five hits, four runs scored and two doubles during the Catamounts tournament run. Armstrong also logged in a .700 slugging percentage and a .500 on-base percentage.
Of the four hits, WCU had in the loss to eventual SoCon champion ETSU, to open the tournament, Armstrong had a double - the only extra-base for the Catamounts against the Bucs. She had a hit and scored two of Western Carolina's four runs in the 4-1 elimination win against No. 2 seed Furman. In the thrilling 6-5 loss to No. 1 seed UNCG, Armstrong was on fire going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a double. Armstrong’s single in the bottom of the seventh, with the Catamounts trailing 6-5 to the Spartans, was the tying run with one out but couldn’t get home to tie the game.
Armstrong ended the season ranked tied for third in the WCU record books for doubles in a season with 13. She also completed her sophomore campaign with a .314 batting average, 44 hits, five homeruns, 27 RBI and 28 runs scored. She was honored with a SoCon Player of the Week nod, SoCon Second Team All-Conference and was a CoSIDA Academic All-District III First Team selection in the 2017 season.
