Salvo and Price Named SoCon All-Conference and All-Freshman

Kara Salvo was named second team All-Southern Conference as well as to the all-freshman team. She leads the team with a .329 batting average.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Western Carolina softball freshmen Kara Salvo and Courtney Pricewere both named to the 2014 Southern Conference All-Conference Second Team and also earned spots on the SoCon All-Freshman Team announced today by the conference office.

The all-freshman selections for Salvo and Price are the first time Western Carolina has had players on the first-year player team since 2010 when Haley Pace, Jordan Fulton and Robyn Burnette were honored. The duo's second team all-conference selections were the first post-season conference honor for WCU since Erin Foster earned first team accolades in 2012 and the first, second team all-conference nod since Nikki Bostin 2007.

Softball Drops Final Game in SoCon Series with Furman, 4-2
Western Carolina softball (18-29, 8-10 SoCon) dropped the final game of the three-game Southern Conference series with Furman (27-22, 11-6 SoCon) 4-2 Sunday the Catamount Softball Complex.

Salvo, getting second team all-conference accolades at third base, leads the Catamounts with a .329 batting average ranking her 13th in the Southern Conference. The Waxhaw, N.C., native has had 14 multiple hit games getting three hits in a game five times. She also leads the team in multiple RBI games with five. Salvo tops the team in hits (47), RBI (25) and homeruns (4). Salvo spent 20 games early in the season behind the plate at catcher due to an injury with starting catcher Heather Chastainbefore moving back to third place. Salvo also earned SoCon Player of the Week honors earlier in the season.

Due to a tie in voting, the second team features two selections at first and third base. Robinson and Appalachian State's Lindsay Loudermilk were second-team selections at first base, while Chattanooga's Sarah Beth Roberts and Western Carolina's Salvo shared honors at third. Robinson and Salvo were also selected to the all-freshman squad.

In the outfield, Price was given a nod at second team all-conference, as well as the SoCon All-Freshman team. The Matthews, N.C., native ranks second on the team with a .311 batting average, ranking 18th in the SoCon, but is hitting .371 in conference only games. She has played in all 50 games and started 48 in left field. Price leads the team with nine doubles and ranks second on the team in hits (46), runs (17) and homeruns (3). She has had 14 multiple hit games and has the team's second longest hitting streak, hitting in eight straight games earlier in the season. She is also tied with teammate Salvo for number of games reaching base safely at 14.

Western Carolina opens play in the 2014 Southern Conference Softball Championship as the No. 6 seed facing No. 3 seed Furman Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. at the UNCG Softball Stadium in Greensboro, N.C. Games will be broadcast online on SoCon TV,, Wednesday through Friday while the championship game is scheduled for Saturday, May 10 at 1:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN3.
