CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina softball (21-32, 6-15 Southern Conference) hosts Samford (13-37, 6-15 SoCon) Saturday and Sunday in the final three-game Southern Conference series of the season. Saturday's doubleheader is set to begin at 3 p.m. with Sunday's single game slated for 1 p.m.
The Catamounts will also be honoring Megan Taylor, Bekah Burkett, Erin Foster and Katie Kingin senior day festivities in between the games of the Saturday doubleheader.
FOSTER NAMED PLAYER OF THE MONTH FOR APRIL: Senior Erin Fosterwas named SoCon Plaeyr of the Month for April ... She blasted eight of her season-high 17 home runs and tallied 19 RBIs in April. She finished the month with a .417 batting average, 23 hits, 20 runs and three doubles while she tallied a 12-game hitting streak.
21 WINS:Western Carolina's 21 wins this season are the most by a Catamount team since 2007 when the team had 28 wins ... The Catamounts' six Southern Conference wins are the most in three years ... The Catamounts had two SoCon wins in 2010 and three in 2011 ... Thrice, from 2007-09, the Catamounts had seven Southern Conference wins ... At least two wins in the three-game series with Samford could assist WCU in equaling the seven-wins dating back to 2009.
FACING SAMFORD:Western Carolina is 2-7 against Samford all-time ... Both Catamount victories have come at Samford ... WCU is 0-3 against Samford in Cullowhee ... Western Carolina won the last meeting at Samford, in the final game of the three-game series, 8-7.
REACHED BASE STREAK: Two Western Carolina players are enjoying a healthy reached base streak ... Erin Foster has reached base safely in the last 18 games while Haley Pacehas gotten on 13 straight games ... In 12 of the 18 games, Foster reached thanks to a 12-game hitting streak that was recently snapped, since then Foster has been drawing walks as she has quickly become the hardest out in the Southern Conference.
WINNING RECORD AT HOME:Western Carolina has a 9-7 record at home and will look to finish out the season, hosting Samford, with a winning record at home.
FULTON LOOKING FOR 50 HITS THIRD TIME: Junior Jordan Fultonhas had 50 or more hits in her first two years as a Catamount ... She currently has 45 hits in her junior campaign and needs five hits this weekend to extend her streak of 50 or more hits in a season.
CATCHING UP WITH Erin Foster: Senior outfielder Erin Foster is speeding up numerous spots in the Catamount record books ... Foster is tied for third for runs scored in a season with 44 and needs to score four runs for second place ... She has 61 hits this season, ranking her second in the WCU record books, having the most hits by a Catamount softball player since former WCU player Stephanie Beatty set the single-season hits record in 2007 with 70 hits ... Foster also ranks second in the record books for homeruns in a season with 17 ... She is chasing the single-season homerun record of 21 set by Ashley Adams in 2006.
