Western Carolina Softball Travels to ETSU Wednesday

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina softball (15-31, 5-13 SoCon) plays its final non-conference road series on Wednesday when the club travels to Johnson City, Tenn. to take on former Southern Conference member East Tennessee State. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.

The Catamounts are coming off a road Southern Conference series win over Georgia Southern. The club won the opening game with the Eagles 6-4, lost the second game 4-3 in 10 innings and took the rubber game 3-1 on Sunday. Western Carolina has been on a tear as of late, winning seven of its last 10 games.

Junior hurler Lauren Ross was has won her last three starts. She had a shutout going into the bottom of the seventh inning on Sunday against Georgia Southern before yielding one run. The Hope Mills, N.C. native has 92 strikeouts this season and needs just eight to secure back-to-back 100 plus strikeout seasons.

Ross, along with teammate Stephanie Beatty, is chasing the career RBI record. Both players have 75 RBI in their career and are looking to snap the record of 78 set by former Catamount Savannah Filley.

Michelle Tating has also been tough on the mound. She fanned a career-high 15 batters in the win over Presbyterian College and also got a pair of wins against Winston-Salem State. Tating was part of a pitching duel in the second game of the series against Georgia Southern, tossing a season-high nine inning and giving up two earned runs and nine hits.

The Catamounts are led at the plate by freshman Amber Hawkins. The second baseman has a .292 batting average and is second on the team in hits with 38. Senior Jamie Swank leads the team in hits with 40 and ranks second on the team in batting average with a .286.

 

 

Western Carolina will host Furman in its final Southern Conference home series this weekend. Saturday's doubleheader, which begins at 1 p.m., is also senior day honoring lone senior Swank.
