CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina softball’s doubleheader at North Carolina Central, scheduled for Tuesday, has been postponed due to the threat of inclement weather in the area. A possible makeup date has yet to be determined.
Western Carolina will now shift focus to the Catamounts’ three-game Southern Conference home series against ETSU this weekend. The doubleheader against the Buccaneers is set to begin at noon Saturday at the Catamount Softball Complex while the single game is set for 2 p.m. Sunday.
The Catamounts are coming off a doubleheader sweep of North Carolina A&T last Thursday. Sophomore pitcher Shaina Reed tossed the first complete game of her Western Carolina career – a one-hit shutout. She faced just 21 batters thanks to a caught stealing and a double-play to end the game by the WCU defense.
Western Carolina is led by sophomore outfielder Hunter Gibbons and senior outfielder Courtney Price each batting .330. Gibbons paces the team with seven homeruns and also leads the team with 31 RBI. Gibbons is just ahead of Price in hits with 35 to Price’s 31. Nationally, Gibbons ranks eighth in the nation in doubles per game, at 0.37 per game, and has 13 doubles this season just one shy of tying the WCU school record for doubles in a season.
The Catamounts are 4-3 over the last seven games with a .291 batting average and has hit eight of their 23 homeruns this season in the last seven games. As a team, Western Carolina ranks sixth in the nation for doubles per game averaging 1.69 per game.
