CULLOWEE, N.C. - Western Carolina softball (8-28, 2-10 SoCon) returns home for the first time in 20 days this weekend welcoming Southern Conference foe College of Charleston. The Catamounts host a doubleheader with the Cougars starting at 1 p.m. Saturday and a single game Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Catamount Softball Complex.
The Catamounts are coming off their first conference series victory this season, taking two of three from UNC Greensboro last weekend. Western Carolina dropped a pair of games at No. 11 Tennessee in a midweek series on Wednesday, but did get some good offensive output from junior third baseman Stephanie Beatty.
Against the Lady Vols, Beatty was a perfect 3-for-3 with a double, a pair of RBI and got hit by a pitch. In the last 10 games, Beatty has a .455 batting average with 10 hits, six runs scored, three doubles, a homerun and seven RBI.
Overall, the Catamounts are led by freshman second baseman Amber Hawkins who is carrying a .306 batting average and also leads the team in hits with 30. Redshirt sophomore Mollie Fowler paces the club in homeruns and RBI as she has four long balls and has batted around 19 Catamounts this season.
Western Carolina will be looking for its first home win this season. The club was swept by Elon in its last home games and the only other home contest, a doubleheader with Florida Gulf Coast, was cancelled due to inclement weather. The three-game set with College of Charleston is the first of three straight home dates for the Catamount softball program which includes a doubleheader with Presbyterian on April 15 beginning at 4 p.m.
College of Charleston was swept by Furman last weekend and then swept Hampton at home in a midweek doubleheader. The Cougars are 23-26 overall and 5-6 in Southern Conference play.
