CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina University softball's Mallory Broome has been named Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week the league office announced Monday.
Broome, a freshman from Monroe, N.C., went 2-0 over the week helping Western Carolina earn a pair of doubleheader sweeps. She tossed two complete games with a 0.00 ERA, not yielding an earned run in 14 innings.
In the second game against Gardner-Webb, on April 3, Broome did not allow an earned run, giving up just four hits and striking out five. She shut down Furman in the second game of the doubleheader against the Paladins, on April 6, earning the first shutout of her career, while tossing her second straight complete game allowing three hits and striking out five.
Over the course of the 14 innings pitched, last week, Broome gave up just four walks.
Broome becomes the first Catamount softball player, this season, to earn a weekly SoCon honor.
Western Carolina travels to Georgia on Wednesday for a mid-week match-up with the Bulldogs. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 4 p.m. A live blog will be provided on catamountsports.com for both games.
