SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Western Carolina softball freshman Kara Salvo has been named Southern Conference Player of the Week for the week of March 17-23.
Salvo proved her versatility on the field and prowess at the plate in five games over the week against ETSU and Appalachian State. She played 11 games and started game one against ETSU at catcher, while starting catcher Heather Chastain was healing from an injury, before she went back to third base. Salvo transitioned back to third base in the middle of the first game against ETSU and played the next four games at the hot corner.
Salvo did not make an error at that hot corner, in five games, and also turned a double play in the Catamounts' 5-0 win over Appalachian State Saturday. At the plate, Salvo had multiple hit games in four of the five games for the week hitting a scorching .632 for the week with 12 hits, five runs scored, six RBI, a homerun and a double.
Salvo went 2-for-4 in game one against ETSU and 3-for-4 with two RBI in the 6-2 win over the future SoCon opponent.
In game two against Appalachian State, Salvo hit a two out homerun, in the top of the first, to set the tone in the 5-0 shutout of the Mountaineers - it was Salvo's fourth homerun of the year. Later in the game, Salvo hit an RBI single past third pass scoring the Catamounts second run of the game, but she wasn't finished. Salvo hit her third RBI of the game when she singled as part of a three run seventh inning for the Catamounts. Salvo went 3-for-4 in the final game against Appalachian State with a run scored and a double.
Seven of Salvo's 12 hits, in the five games, came against SoCon opponent Appalachian State.
