BOONE, N.C. - Western Carolina softball dropped its final game of the series against Appalachian State 9-1 Monday. The Catamounts fall to 4-17 and 0-3 in the Southern Conference while the Mountaineers improve to 4-18 and 3-0 in the SoCon.

Like the previous two games, Appalachian State struck first scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. Western Carolina pitcher Lauren Ross got two quick outs forcing the first two Mountaineers to ground out to shortstop Heather Pritchard. However, she gave up a walk to Katie Boyd and then Brittany Gaston singled up the middle to place runners at first and second. Meagan Squartino's two RBI double plated two runs for Appalachian State.

The Mountaineers tacked on four runs in the bottom of the third. After getting two quick outs, Ross gave up four consecutive walks to not only load the bases but walk in a run. Head Coach Christine Hornak pulled Ross for Michelle Tating who allowed a base clearing double by Ashley Gaston.

Western Carolina avoided the shutout by picking up a run in the top of the fourth inning. Back-to-back singles by Amber Hawkins and Beth Hauser set up an RBI opportunity for Ross who hit a single to left field to score Hawkins. Mollie Fowler drew a walk to load the bases but a fielder's choice by Tating and a ground out to the pitcher by Danielle Reese ended the Catamount threat.

Appalachian State tacked on three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning which shortened the game due to the run rule.

Ross takes the loss in the game falling to 0-8 on the season. She led the club with two singles and also had an RBI.

The Catamounts return to action Thursday when the club travels to Greensboro, N.C. to take on North Carolina A&T in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
