CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina softball (8-14, 1-2 Southern Conference) hosts UNCG (18-4, 2-1 SoCon) Saturday and Sunday in a three-game Southern Conference Series at the Catamount Softball Complex. The doubleheader on Saturday begins at 1 p.m. and the single-game is at 1 p.m. Sunday.
The Catamounts are coming off a doubleheader split with Winthrop in a non-conference mid-week meeting Wednesday. Western Carolina dropped the first game 7-5 and battled back to defeat the Eagles 8-7 in the second game. Senior Shemekia Scotton snapped a 7-7 tie when she hit a homerun over the centerfield wall, in the bottom of the sixth, to all but season the game.
Western Carolina is on a bit of a homerun tear. After hitting just two homeruns in the first 17 games of the season, the Catamounts have hit at least one homerun in the last five games. WCU has also hit three or more homeruns in the last three games. Three or more players have hit three or more homeruns in that streak including senior third baseman Haley Pace who has a homerun in the last four games. Sophomore Heather Chastain and freshman Taylor Sigmon each have three homeruns.
Sophomore pitcher Jordan Garrett ranks 22nd in the nation for average strikeouts in a seven inning game with 9.5 ... She also ranks first in the Southern Conference for total strikeouts this season with 113. Garrett is set to quickly eclipse her strikeout total from last season by the end of March. She had 167 strikeouts in 2012 in 46 appearances. Garrett has 113 strikeouts so far this season in 18 appearances.
UNCG split with Charlotte on Thursday winning the first game 8-6 and dropping the second game8-4. After winning seven straight, the Spartans have lost two of their last three games including being no hit against Samford, losing 5-0, on March 10.

Spartan pitcher Raeanne Banks paces UNCG with a 10-1 record and a 1.43 ERA. She has 75 strikeouts and allowed 23 runs.
UNCG has five players hitting above .300. Lindsay Thomas is flirting with a .400 batting average sitting at .397 with 27 hits, 19 runs, six doubles nine homeruns and 19 RBI.
Western Carolina trails UNCG in the all-time series 10-11. The Spartans have won the last five meetings, but the Catamounts are 4-5 against UNCG in Cullowhee.
