CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina softball (12-9) hosts its home opener Tuesday welcoming UNC Wilmington (4-17) for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. at the Catamount Softball Complex.
The twin bill is the start of seven games in seven days for Western Carolina. The Catamounts will also host Lipscomb in a doubleheader Wednesday beginning at 3 p.m. and entertain Southern Conference opponent Georgia Southern Saturday and Sunday in a three-game series.
Western Carolina played its first 21 games of the 2011 season on the road. The Catamounts are coming off three consecutive losses to Furman in both teams' Southern Conference opener.
UNC Wilmington and Western Carolina will meet for the sixth time in school history. The teams are tied in the series three all. The Catamounts won the last meeting, 11-3, on March 18, 2007, at Western Carolina's home tournament. Lipscomb holds a 4-0 record over Western Carolina.
The Catamounts are led by freshman Kelly Braman who has a .419 batting average. Junior Erin Foster is tied with Jordan Fulton for most hits on the team, with 21. Foster also ranks second in batting average with .375.
Sophomore pitcher Amber Steinhardt leads the Catamounts with 6-3 record and a 1.68 ERA. Junior lefty hurler Katie King also has six wins, with a 6-5 record, and a 2.43 ERA.
