CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina softball (5-11) hosts Charlotte (8-7) at 3 p.m. Wednesday in its home opener at the Catamount Softball Complex. It will be a single game and not a double header.

Western Carolina Softball Splits Opening Day at Charlotte First Pitch Classic
Fresh off its first win of the season on Wednesday, the Western Carolina softball team split its two games on Friday on the opening day of the Charlotte First Pitch Classic. The Catamounts surrendered five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as Marshall rallied from down three to a 10-8 victory in the first game of tournament play. In the evening session, WCU plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning, adding an insurance run in the third to hold on to knock the host Charlotte 49ers from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 4-2 win. The Catamounts are coming off a 7-0 shellacking of St. John's in the final day of the Sixth Annual Bulldog Invitational. It was the first time in this young season the Catamounts shut out an opponent. Freshman catcher Kara Salvo notched the first grand-slam of her career in the game and Courtney Price also hit a homerun. Overall, last weekend, Western Carolina picked up two runs in the tournament which includes a huge 5-4, eight inning, victory over UAB, a team picked to win Conference USA.

Charlotte, who is also in Conference USA and picked to finish 10th, picked up four wins this weekend at the 49er Invitational moving to above .500 on the season Salvo leads the Catamounts hitting .349 on the season with a team-leading 15 hits, two homeruns, a double, eight RBI and five runs scored. She has also reached base safely in the last 13 games.

Sophomore shortstop Karley Harkey is just below Salvo in hits with 15 and she has also scored nine runs. Harkey has three triples this season which ranks her second in the Catamount career record books for triples in a season.
