CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina softball (3-8) will compete in the Sixth Annual Bulldog Invitational, hosted by No. 18 Georgia, February 28-March 2 in Athens, Ga.

The Catamounts open the tournament against UAB at 10 a.m. Friday. Western Carolina will then face No. 18 Georgia later in the day at 3 p.m. Saturday Western Carolina will face UAB for the second straight time in the tournament, at 10 a.m., and close out the tournament with consecutive games against St. Johns' with the first game coming at 5:30 p.m. Saturday and concluding with St. John's at 10 a.m. Sunday.

Scouting the Competition:
Including this weekend's play at the Bulldog Invitational, UAB will have had just two home games through the first 16 to begin the 2014 campaign. In true road games, the Blazers are 0-2 and 3-4 in neutral site matchups. Out of 34 total games away from the UAB Softball Field during the 2014 season, the Blazers will have played in 14 of those once play is completed at this weekend's tournament.

No. 18 Georgia enters the weekend with a 12-1 overall record. The Bulldogs won 11 straight to open the season and shut out seven of those opponents before dropping a 3-2 decision to South Alabama. The Bulldogs are coming off the Citrus Classic in Orlando, Fla., where they finished 3-1.

St. John's enters the Bulldog Invitational with a 4-5 overall mark. The Red Storm have picked up wins over Ohio State, Florida Atlantic, UMKC and Jackson State, and dropped decisions to Tulsa, Northern Illinois, Louisville and Arkansas twice.


Western Carolina's game against No. 18 Georgia, as part of the Bulldog Invitational, will be the third SEC team the Catamounts will face in three weeks ... Western Carolna played Ole Miss Feb. 15, South Carolina Feb. 25 and will go up against Georgia on Feb. 28 ... Georgia is the first Top-25 opponent WCU will face this season.

Five of the top six who are leading the Catamounts in batting average are freshmen and sophomores ... Freshman Kara Salvo ranks second on the team in batting average with a .310 batting average and is tied for second on the team with nine hits ... Sophomore Taylor Sigmon leads the team with 10 hits.
