CULLOWHEE, N.C. -Western Carolina softball (0-5) travels to Spartanburg, S.C. Friday to participate in the Spartan Classic Feb. 21-23.
The Catamounts open the tournament facing host USC Upstate on Friday. The game has been moved to 4 p.m., from its original 3 p.m. first pitch, due to expected rain in the morning.
Western Carolina will face host USC Upstate, Liberty and Winthrop at the USC Upstate Tournament. The Catamounts are 0-5 against USC Upstate, 2-6 against Winthrop and will meet Liberty for the first time.
Junior pitcher Jordan Garrett broke the Western Carolina career strikeout record in the Catamounts' 1-0 loss to Fordham Feb. 16 at the College of Charleston Classic ... She snapped the record of 382 strikeouts held by former Catamount Mendy McKenzieand now holds the record with 386 strikeouts and counting.
Sophomore Taylor Sigmonis riding a four-game hitting streak ... She is also getting it done on the mound in a relief setting ... Sigmon has made three relief appearances tossing five scoreless innings giving up just three hits and recording six strikeouts.
A youthful team, Western Carolina has just two seniors and two juniors with the rest sophomores and freshman ... During last week's tournament, there was a time Western Carolina had just one senior and one junior on the field.
Western Carolina added a home game with Charlotte on March 5, which upped its home opener from March 15 against Elon to March 5.
