Cullowhee, N.C. -
The long wait is over. This weekend, Feb. 11 and 12, marks the debut of Western Carolina softball as the Catamounts travel to the Georgia State First Pitch Classic in Atlanta, Ga.
Western will first face Tennessee Tech, who made the NCAA Tournament a year ago, at 10:00 am on Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Georgia State softball facility in Panthersville, Ga. Later that afternoon, Western will face the host Panthers at 2:30 pm as the round-robin format continues. On Sunday, the Catamounts will face the Mercer Bears at 12:15 pm to determine who and when they'll play in the bracket finals. WCU could either play in the consolation game at 2:30 pm or in the championship match at 4:45 pm.
"We are very excited about opening our inaugural season on Saturday at the Georgia State tournament. We have been preparing for this day for quite awhile and the entire team is ready to get things started," said first-year head coach Megan Smith. "We have such a special group of players to start the legacy of Catamount Softball. They have been working so hard and they all have so much pride in their role as a founding member of this program. I couldn't have asked for a better group of young women to leave their mark on this program's history."
All four games of the Georgia State First Pitch Classic will be broadcast by the Catamount Sports Network and can be heard locally in Cullowhee on WWCU-FM, Power 90dot5 or on-line at www.WWCUFM.com. Air time for each broadcast is set for 10 minutes prior to the first pitch.
