CULLOWHEE, N.C. -Western Carolina softball opens the 2013 season Friday at the Subway Upstate Classic hosted by USC Upstate in Spartanburg, S.C. The Catamounts the University of Missouri- Kansas City (UMKC) at 2 p.m. Friday to begin the three-day tournament, facing Maine at noon Saturday and North Carolina Central at 6 p.m. Western Carolina closes out the tournament facing host USC Upstate at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Western Carolina will have a veteran look in the infield with seven of the eight position players returning. Freshman Taylor Sigmonis expected to get the starting nod at first base.
The Catamounts return to game-tested pitchers, which includes senior Amber Steinhardt and sophomore Jordan Garrett. Steinhardt made 34 appearances and had an 8-7 record. Garrett paced the Catamounts in 2012 with 147 strikeouts becoming the first Catamount freshmen pitcher to go over 100 strikeouts since 2007.
Steinhardt and fellow senior Shemekia Scotton are two returning who hit above .300 for the Catamounts in 2012. Scotton ranked second on the team with a .331 batting average and was recently named 2013 Southern Conference First Team Preseason All-Conference. Steinhardt hit .311 in 2012 and ranked third on the team with six homeruns.
