SPARTANTBURG, S.C. - Western Carolina University softball senior Shemekia Scotton was named to the Southern Conference Preseason All-Conference First Team, at the designated player position, and the Catamounts were picked seventh in the preseason poll, in voting by the league coaches, as announced by the league office today.

Scotton's preseason first team selection is the first for the Catamounts since Amber Hawwkins received the nod in 2010. Scotton ranked second on the team, in 2012, with a .331 batting average and was third on the team in homeruns with five. She had 46 hits, seven doubles and two triples and a perfect 4-for-4 in stolen bases. She had 10 multiple hit games and five multiple RBI games in the season.

Western Carolina's seventh place ranking, in the Southern Conference preseason poll, is the highest ranking for in the preseason since the Catamounts were picked sixth in 2008.

The Catamounts open the season on February 8 at the Subway Upstate Classic hosted by USC Upstate.
