CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina softball swept Mars Hill 2-1 and 4-2 Saturday in fall doubleheader Saturday at the Catamount Softball Complex.
Three consecutive two out singles by Kara Salvo, Heather Chastain and Taylor Sigmon loaded the bases in the opening inning of game one. Courtney Price hit an RBI single past second base scoring Salvo but the inning was over as Chastain got caught in a run down at home.
Western Carolina added what would turn out to be the winning run in the bottom of the third. Senior left fielder Amelia Griffin led off with a single, beating out a throw to first, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brittany Eudy. With one out, Chastain hit an RBI single up the middle to score Griffin.
Mars Hill avoided a shutout by scoring a run in the top of the fifth.
Junior hurler Jordan Garrett got the start going six innings allowing one run on five hits and struck out four. Sigmon came into the game in the seventh to close out the game.
Sigmon got back-to-back strikeouts to open the seventh but then got into a bit of a jam when she walked a batter and another Lion batter reached on a Western Carolina batter. With runners on second and third Sigmon calmly fanned the final Mars Hill batter, for her third strikeout of the inning, to end the game.
Mars Hills' Micah James' lead-off homerun got the Lions the early 1-0 lead in the second inning of the second game.
Western Carolina answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. Chastain led off with a single up the middle but pinch runner Whitney Haywood
was erased at second when Sigmon hit into a fielder's choice. Singles by Price and Karly Harkey loaded the bases and a single RBI by Makenzi McAteer scored Sigmon to tie the game at one. The Catamounts took the lead on a throwing error at home plating Price.
A pair of lead-off walks and a single by Sigmon loaded the bases for Western Carolina in the bottom of the fifth inning. A wild pitch scored pinch runner Sarah Perrine for the first of the two runs of the inning. Brittany Haywood hit a laser to right field for an RBI single scoring pinch runner Price but she and Sigmon were thrown out in an unconventional double play for the first two outs of the inning. Harkey extended the inning with a single and McAteer got on first thanks to an error but Amber Kimrey ground out to end the inning.
Mars Hill cut the Catamount lead in half with one swing of the bat in the top of the sixth. Robyn Stanek hit a homerun over the left field wall to trim Western Carolina's lead to 4-2.
Courtney Buchannan tossed six innings in the second game giving up two runs on five hits and struck out four. Sigmon again came into the game in relief in the seventh inning and struck out the side. In her two innings of work, both in game one and game two, Sigmon six strikeouts against Mars Hill.
Western Carolina will host a fall tournament October 5 hosting Gardner-Webb at noon and Walters State at 4 p.m. at the Catamount Softball Complex.
