GREENSBORO, N.C. -Western Carolina softball (20-35) dropped into the losers bracket in the Southern Conference Championships with a 6-0 loss to Georgia Southern (30-27) Thursday at the UNCG Softball Complex. The Catamounts will face Samford at 9:30 p.m. tonight with the loser being eliminated from the tournament.
The Eagles Alexa Lewis led off the game with a solo homerun over the centerfield wall and it all but set the stage for the rest of the game. Western Carolina sophomore pitcher Jordan Garrettgave up the lead-off homerun but battled back for the ensuing two innings before getting into a jam again.
Back-to-back singles by Georgia Southern knocked Garrett out of the game as she went 3.1 innings. Garrett was replaced by Mallory Broomewho gave up a two-run shot, in the fourth and the Eagles ended the inning yielding four runs in the inning.
Western Carolina had its first base runners and scoring chance in the bottom of the fifth inning. Senior Haley Pace blew Georgia Southern's Sarah Purvis' perfect game attempt when she drew a one out walk. Heather Chastain followed reaching first on a Eagle error. With two outs, freshman short stop Karley Harkeyended Purvis' no-hitter with a little bloop single to the catcher to load the bases. Junior Makenzi McAteer struck out looking to end the Catamount threat.
Georgia Southern added a run in the top of the seventh.
Pace got the second hit of the game for Western Carolina when she singled through the right side. However, Pace was stranded at first when Chastain fouled out to right field and Megan Crowe flew out to left field.
Garrett took the loss and falls to 13-13 on the season.
