GREENSBORO, N.C. - Western Carolina softball (21-32, 6-15 Southern Conference) dropped its final game of the three-game series with UNCG (21-29, 10-10 SoCon), 4-2, Sunday at the UNCG Softball Field.
Western Carolina squandered almost every opportunity given to it in the game, including failing to score in the third inning with bases loaded and no outs. In the top of the sixth, the Catamounts had runners at second and third after Amber Steinhardt drew a walk and Haley Pace smoked a shot to left centerfield for a double. However the Catamounts failed to capitalize watching their chances dwindle with two quick outs.
After starting pitcher Steinhardt gave up two runs to UNCG in the first and third inning, she helped herself in the top oft the fourth. Steinhardt hit her sixth homerun of the season, a two run shot that tied the game at two.
The Spartans scored a single run in the fourth and fifth inning to re-take the lead and all but ice the game.
Steinhardt takes the loss and falls to 8-7 on the season. She allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits and struck out two.
Western Carolina had just five hits in the game, two coming from Morgan Wyatt.
Western Carolina hosts its final home games of the season next weekend as the Catamounts welcome Samford for a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday. Seniors Bekah Burkett, Megan Taylor, Erin Foster and Katie King will be honored between games on Saturday.
