BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Western Carolina softball picked up its first Southern Conference victory of the season with a 7-2 victory over Samford on Saturday at the Samford Softball Complex.

The second game of the doubleheader was suspended due to deteriorating weather conditions with the Bulldogs leading 7-2 in the top of the sixth with one out for the Catamounts. Madison Armstrong had just hit her fifth homerun of the season and Shaina Reed followed with a single up the middle before play was halted.

Turning Point
Western Carolina scored the first five runs of the game, over the first five innings, including homeruns from Erica Hayes and Ashlyn Long.

How it Happened
- Hayes set the tone early in the game with a lead-off homerun over the right field wall to give WCU an early 1-0 lead.
- The Catamounts tacked on a second run in the fourth inning when Hunter Gibbons hit a one-out triple and scored courtesy of an RBI double by Shaina Reed.
- Sophomore Long all but put the game out of reach when she launched a three-run homerun in the top of the fifth. Addie Pate led off reaching first on a Bulldog error. Danielle Chapman followed with a bunt single. With two outs, Long homered to right center.
- In the bottom of the fifth and bottom of the sixth Samford pushed two runs across.
- Western Carolina put the exclamation point on the game with two more runs in the top of the seventh courtesy of Gibbons bat. With two outs Long walked and Gibbons followed with a two-run homerun over the left field wall on a 1-1 count.

Inside the Box Score
- Freshman pitcher Haley Brogden tossed her fourth complete game improving to 3-4 on the year. She allowed two runs, one earned, six hits walked six and struck out a career-best seven.
- Gibbons went 2-for-4 in the game with a triple, a homerun, two RBI, and two runs scored.
- E. Hayes and Long each had homeruns in the game. Long also scored two runs.
- Both teams had six hits in the game. 

News & Notes
- The triple of from Gibbons in game one was the first of her career.
- Gibbons extended her on-base streak to 17-straight going 2-for-4 in game one against Samford. That streak is in jeopardy in the game two, prior to the suspension of play, as she is 0-for-3 in the game.
- Long's homerun in game one gives her five for the season which is a season-high for the sophomore. - Western Carolina's win in game one halts a six-game losing streak.
- Gibbons now has nine homeruns this season and pushes her career total to 26 and continues to hold down second place in the WCU record books. She needs four homeruns to break the Catamount record of 29.
