GREENSBORO, N.C. - Western Carolina softball (17-25, 7-8 Southern Conference) dropped the final game of the three-game series at UNCG (18-23, 4-11 SoCon) 9-2 Sunday. The Catamounts, however, take its third overall SoCon series of the season after winning the doubleheader Saturday.
UNCG plated a run in the bottom of the first when Catamount starting pitcher Jordan Garrett gave up a lead-off walk to Dominique Madruga. A come-backer to Garrett by Allison Geiner moved Madruga to second and then when Katelyn Bedwell flew out to left field Madruga went to third on a WCU throwing error. Danielle Vega hit an RBI single to score Madruga. The inning ended when Nicole Thomas singled to left field and Vega was thrown out at third base by Courtney Price.
Two Western Carolina walks and a pair of walks given up by Garrett accounted for three runs for UNCG in the bottom of the third. Madruga was at it again as she hit a lead-off single and then Geiner reached on the first of two Western Carolina fielding errors. With one out, Vega hit an RBI sac bunt to score the first of three runs in the inning. Back-to-back walks by Garrett loaded the bases and two more Spartans scored off a WCU fielding error.
Western Carolina got two runs back in the top of the fourth. Courtney Price and Kara Salvo hit back-to-back singles. Price moved to third when Taylor Sigmon hit into a fielder's choice and Salvo was out at second. UNCG's first error of the game, a throwing miscue down to first, allowed Harkey to reach first Price to score. Heather Chastain followed with a frozen rope up the middle scoring Sigmon for the RBI.
UNCG came up with five runs in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Vega doubled and scored, with two outs, on a single by Tatiana Alcala. Ally Vergona plopped a shot over the head of Catamount shortstop Harkey allowing two more runs to score. Hagan Kiser's RBI double tacked on the fourth run of the inning. Freshman hurler Courtney Buchanan
came into the inning with two outs and a runner on first and gave up the second double of the inning and scoring the Spartans' fifth run of the inning.
Western Carolina attempted to claw back into the game in the top of the sixth. A one out single by Salvo and a walk by Sigmon had runners on first and second. With two outs Chastain legged out a single to load the bases. Pinch hitter Lexi Ross struck out to end the scoring chance.
Brooke Coggins lead-off single, in the top of the seventh, had Western Carolina in the mix for another run. Coggins moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a ground out by Makenzi McAteer. Amelia Griffin flew out to right field for the second out and Price ground out to strand Coggins and end the inning and the game.
Garrett falls to 8-13 on the season as she gave up nine runs, six earned, on eight hits walking four batters and struck out three. Garrett was lifted in the fifth, with two outs, after giving up an RBI double to score the fourth run of the inning.
Buchanan tossed one and a third innings of scoreless ball giving up one hit.
Western Carolina had six hits in the game including a pair of base knocks by Salvo.
Western Carolina will play a pair of mid-week non-conference games starting Tuesday when the team travels to Gardner-Webb for a 2 p.m. doubleheader. The Catamounts will then travel to North Carolina Central for another 2 p.m. twin bill.
