Georgia Southern Sweeps Softball 7-0, 9-2 Saturday

STATESBORO, Ga. - Western Carolina softball (13-20, 3-5 Southern Conference) was swept by Georgia Southern (23-11, 7-1 SoCon) 7-0, 9-2 in doubleheader action Saturday at Eagle Field.

Georgia Southern 7, Western Carolina 0

After four scoreless innings, Georgia Southern plated four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Relief pitcher Courtney Buchanan got into a jam and couldn't wiggle out accounting for the Eagle runs. With one out and a runner on second Buchanan dealt back-to-back walks to load the bases. Morgan Robinson was hit by a pitch to score the first run of the game. Buchanan's third walk of the inning, to Kaitlyn Johnson, scored the second run. A two out two RBI single by Lexi Allen plated two more runs.

Western Carolina got its first base runner of the game in the top of the sixth. With two outs, Makenzi McAteer drew a two out walk, after she got second life with two strikes when Eagle pitcher Sarah Purvis was called for an illegal pitch. Senior Amelia Griffin stuck out to end the inning.

Georgia Southern added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. A single and a fielder's choice, with an error at Catamount second base to allow the runner to advance to second, had runners at first and second with one out. With two outs, pinch hitter Dominique Grossman doubled to left field scoring two runs. Western Carolina's second error of the inning allowed the Eagles to score the third run of the inning. All toll, WCU had three errors in the inning with two leading to Eagle runs.

Western Carolina got just its second base runner of the game when sophomore Karley Harkey drew a lead-off walk in in the top of the seventh. Kara Salvo struck out and Taylor Simgon flew out to center field for the second out. Heather Chastain battled with Purvis and got hit by a pitch. Freshman Courtney Price breaks up Purvis' no-hitter attempt hitting a single to the left side to load the bases. Amber Kimrey lined out to second base to end the game.

Junior Jordan Garrett started the game and went 2.1 innings before being lifted for Buchanan in the third inning. Garrett did not give up a run in her innings pitched but did yield six walks and struck out three.

Buchanan takes the loss and falls to 5-4 on the year. She gave up five hits, four earned runs, walked five and struck out four.

Georgia Southern 9, Western Carolina 2

Georgia Southern scored three runs in the bottom of the first and rode it to a 6-1 win in the second game of the doubleheader.

The Catamounts plated a run in the top of the second. Sigmon led off with a single to left field and moved to third off an Eagle error that allowed Chastain to reach first. Price hit into a fielder's choice bunt that scored Sigmon. Western Carolina would have bases loaded and no outs, when Kimrey reached on a fielder's choice, but couldn't move another runner home.

The Eagles all but put the game away when they scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth.

The Catamounts scored their second run of the game in the top of the sixth. Price got her second hit of the series with the Eagles when she hit a lead-off double and then got into scoring position when she stole third. Whitney Haywood hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Price.

Georgia Southern added four runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Price has now reached safely in the last 10 games. In game two, Price was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

Garrett takes the loss tossing a complete game falling to 5-11 on the season.

Western Carolina and Georgia Southern complete the three-game SoCon series on Sunday with game time set for 1 p.m. Catamount fans can listen to the game online at
