BIRMINGHAM, Ala - Sophomore pitcher Jordan Garrett threw a three-hit shutout as Western Carolina softball (11-19, 3-6, Southern Conference) defeated Samford (10-17, 2-7 SoCon) 1-0 Sunday, at the UAB Softball Complex, to take its first Southern Conference series of the season.
Garrett improves to 9-8 on the season. She tossed a complete game allowing just three hits and struck out six.
Amelia Griffin drew a lead-off walk, in the top of the first, and set up a run for Western Carolina. Griffin was pushed over to second a sacrifice bunt by Megan Crowe and Griffin scored on an RBI double, to left center, by freshman Taylor Sigmon.
Catamount sophomore pitcher Jordan Garrett also yielded a lead-off walk, in Samford's half of the first, which eventually set up bases loaded with one out. Garrett got the Bulldog's Misha Aldride to strike out swinging and forced a ground out by Shelby Scott to end the Samford threat.
Western Carolina had huge scoring chances in the second and the third inning and left a total of five base runners stranded.
Crowe led off the third inning with a double to left centerfield, extending her hitting streak to five. With one out, Sigmon drew a walk and Pace hit a fielder's choice, erasing Crowe at third. With two outs, Amber Steinhardt was issued the second walk of the inning to load the bases. Scotton struck out to end the Catamount threat.
Western Carolina wiggled out of a bit of a jam when Samford's Rachel Bickert hit a lead-off double in the bottom of the fifth. Catamount Garrett struck out Arica Dykes for the first out. With two outs, Callie Brister was hit by a pitch to put Samford runners at first and second. Garrett forced Megan Dowdy to line out to end the inning.
The Catamounts squandered another key scoring chance in the top of the sixth. Amber Steinhardt drew a lead-off walk and was replaced at first by pinch runner Amber Kimrey. Scotton got on board thanks to a Samford error and Jordan Fulton dinked a single past the Samford shortstop to load the bases. Pinch hitter Makenzi McAteer struck out and Griffin ground into a fielder's choice, and Fulton was out at second, to end the inning.
Samford made the game interesting in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Bulldogs' Arica Dykes drew a one out walk putting the tying run at first. Garrett got a strike out and a ground out to end the inning and the game.
Western Carolina continues its road swing with a non-conference mid-week doubleheader at USC Upstate on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
