SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Western Carolina softball (0-1) dropped its opening game of the season Friday, 6-2, to the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) (1-0) at the Subway Upstate Classic at Cyrill Stadium.
The Catamounts couldn't overcome a four-run fourth inning by UMKC. The Roos scored a pair of runs off a Western Carolina fielding error and also got a pair of runs from Emily Otto. UMKC also added one run in the bottom of the sixth.
UMKC scored first in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs, Marlee Maples doubled to left center and scored off an RBI double by Otto.
Western Carolina took a short-lived lead in the top of the third. Freshman first baseman Taylor Sigmon picked up the first hit of her career, a single through the left side. A sacrifice bunt by Kayla Myers moved Sigmon to second. With one out, junior left fielder Amelia Griffin singled to left field and Sigmon advanced to third. After Griffin stole second, senior Shemekia Scotton hit a two RBI double to give the Catamounts a 2-1 lead.
Sophomore hurler Jordan Garrett took the loss in the game as she tossed a complete game, falling to 0-1. She allowed nine hits, five earned runs and recorded three strikeouts. Amber Steinhardt and Griffin each had two hits in the game.
Western Carolina will face Maine at noon and North Carolina Central at 6 p.m. Saturday in second day action of the Subway Upstate Classic.
