Cullowhee, N.C. -
Western Carolina football linebacker Adrian McLeod and women's soccer goalkeeper Caitlin Williams were named the Southern Conference Athletes of the Month for November as released by the conference office today.
The duo join SoCon September Women's Golfer of the Month, freshman Blaire Minter, as three Catamounts garnered monthly honors during the fall season.
McLeod led the Catamount defense with 34 total tackles during final month of the season including 15 solo stops and 5.5 tackles for loss with a pair of sacks.
McLeod recorded nine tackles, including four solo stops and two for loss, in Western Carolina's win over the Chattanooga Mocs on Nov. 1. The junior also sacked the Mocs quarterback, forced a fumble and broke up a pass across the middle in helping the Catamounts snap a 20-game winless drought in league play. A week later at Elon, the Oxon Hills, Md., native tallied eight tackles and a pass break-up for the defense.
In the season finale against second-ranked Appalachian State, McLeod tallied a career-high 17 tackles, including eight solo stops and 3.5 tackles for loss and a sack in earning SoCon Defensive Player of the Week plaudits.
Williams, a sophomore net minder, guided the Catamount women's soccer team to its second-ever SoCon Women's Soccer tournament championship and subsequent second trip to the NCAA tournament.
Williams enjoyed a stellar month of November which started by earning an extra-session victory over Elon on penalty kicks in the opening round of the conference tournament. The Liberty, S.C., native stopped two of Elon's shot attempts to send the Catamounts to the semifinal round of the SoCon championship.
After earning a shutout win against third seeded Samford, Williams had a career-day against top seeded - and unbeaten - UNC Greensboro in the Championship game. In addition to not allowing goal through regulation and two overtimes, Williams stonewalled four penalty kick attempts by UNCG to give the Catamounts a 2-0 title win on PK's.
Williams made nine saves in a 5-0 loss to the top seeded North Carolina Tar Heels in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
All told in the month, Williams posted two shutouts between the pipes, saved six overtime penalty kick opportunities and recorded 20 saves in four matches played.
Williams adds the monthly award to a list of accolades from her sophomore season, earning SoCon Student Athlete of the Week, SoCon Player of the Week, all-tournament team honors and was named the SoCon Tournament MVP this year.
