2007 Southern Conference Women's Soccer Championship Bracket
Cullowhee, N.C. - Fifth-seeded Western Carolina will travel to No. 4 College of Charleston this Sunday, Nov. 4 at 1:00 pm in the opening round of the 2007 Southern Conference Women's Soccer Tournament. The tournament seeding and pairings were announced by the conference office late Thursday evening after the completion of all regular season matches.
The College of Charleston will be providing live Game Stats on Sunday afternoon - fans can access the live stats by visiting www.CofCSports.com.
The top eight teams from the SoCon make post-season play, with the top four seeds hosting first round matches on Sunday. The winner of the WCU-CofC match will advance to face the winner of No. 1 UNC Greensboro - No. 8 Elon in semifinal action at 4:30 pm on Friday, Nov. 9 at Alumni Soccer Stadium on the campus of Davidson College.
Western Carolina clinched its spot in the post-season tournament with its 1-0 road shutout victory over Wofford on Wednesday afternoon placing the Catamounts fifth. However, the squad had to play the waiting game to see what its first round destination would be. With Furman's dominating, 8-0, victory over Chattanooga, the Lady Paladins wrapped up the tourney's third seed, relegating the College of Charleston to fourth and thus sending the Catamounts to Charleston.
It is the second-consecutive year in which Western will have to visit the Cougars at Patriot's Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C., in an opening round match. Last season, the Catamounts raced out to a 3-0 lead midway through the second half, but then had to weather a Cougar storm as Charleston netted back-to-back goals inside the final 10 minutes to set up a sprint to the finish with WCU advancing with a 3-2 victory.
Including last season's first round road win, Western has won both of the previous two meetings with the Cougars in SoCon tournament play. During its tournament championship run in 2005, Megan Chambers tied the game to force overtime with Heather Dittmer's looping golden goal seven and a half minutes into overtime lifted fourth-seeded Western Carolina to the victory and started the run for the SoCon Championship.
Western dropped its regular season match-up with the Cougars back on Oct. 11 in Charleston, 2-0, as then league-leading CofC tallied a pair of second half goals in an otherwise evenly played match. The two teams combined for 12 shots - six apiece - but neither side was able to establish a solid offensive attack. The loss snapped WCU's four-match winning streak over the Cougars and pushed the overall series to 7-4-1 in favor of the Catamounts.
Match time on Sunday afternoon is set for 1:00 pm.
