CATAMOUNTS VS. SPARTANS - 1ST MEETING:
Western Battles Preseason Favorite, UNC Greensboro, to a 1-1 Tie
Greensboro, N.C. - Western Carolina junior Heather Dittmer scored inside the 69th minute which pulled the Catamounts even at one-goal apiece with the preseason Southern Conference favorite, UNC Greensboro Spartans, in a match that battled through two overtime sessions before being called a draw, 1-1, at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. The draw snaps Western's four-match losing skid and marked the first-ever tie between the two schools in the 11 all-time meetings.
UNC Greensboro lit the board first early in the second half. Heather Deutschle sent the ball to Shannon Donovan just passed midfield where she passed to freshman Kelly Attayek. The rookie drew Catamount senior goal keeper, Alesha Row, off the goal line and shot it past her to score in the 50th minute and put UNCG up 1-0. The goal was Attayek's first collegiate goal.
Western Carolina got the equalizer off a corner kick in the 69th minute of the match when freshman Jenny Matteson launched the ball into the box where Dittmer leaped to get a head on it for the goal. Matteson earned the assist on the score for her first collegiate point.
