Game Notes for Furman / Wofford Get Acrobat Reader

Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's soccer team wraps up its' last full weekend of regular season action on the road in the Palmetto State. The Catamounts will play at Furman on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m., before playing in a 2:00 p.m. contest at Wofford on Sunday afternoon.

The Catamounts (5-6-5, 2-3-3) are looking for their first win since a 1-0 shutout over Georgia Southern on Sept. 27. Last weekend, WCU fell to the College of Charleston, 1-0, and tied The Citadel, 0-0, after two extra time periods.

The six-game winless streak for WCU is the longest since 2004 when the Cats went six games (0-5-1) without a win from Aug. 31 to Sept. 22, 2004. The five draws this season are the most in school in school history surpassing a previous mark of three set four times, most recently in 2007 (9-8-3 overall).

Junior goalkeeper Caitlin Williams has 218 career saves is just 17 away from tying former WCU standout Alesha Row (2003-2006) for second all-time in the WCU record books with 235 career saves.

Furman (10-5-0, 4-4-0) has won two out of its last three matches. The Lady Paladins dropped a 1-0 decision to Davidson last Sunday. Before Sunday's loss, Furman shut out Southern Conference opponents Chattanooga (1-0) and Georgia Southern (2-0). Furman is led by sophomore forward Martha Hall, who has 19 total points (9 goals and 1 assist) in 15 contests. Katya Gokhman (4 goals and 3 assists) and Alexa Jones (5 goals) have combined for anther nine Paladin goals this season. Goalkeeper Jessica Smith holds a 0.94 Goals Against Average with 52 saves in 15 starts.

The Catamounts trail in the series to Furman, 11-3. Last season, Western Carolina picked up a 1-0 win over the Paladins on Oct. 5, 2008 at the Catamount Athletic Complex. Graduate Assistant Coach Anna Betton returns to Greenville, S.C., to face her old team for the first time since garnering Southern Conference Player of the Year honors in 2007. Betton helped lead the Lady Paladins to a 2007 Southern Conference Championship as she produced 13 goals and 10 assists for 30 points in 20 matches.

Sunday's opponent, Wofford (3-12-2, 2-5-2 SoCon), enters this weekend with a four-match winless streak. The Terriers tied with Appalachian State on Oct. 22 (1-1), but dropped matches to Davidson (4-0) and Georgia Southern (2-3). Nikki Seibert leads the Terriers with 10 points (4 goals and 2 assists), while Sydney Reed follows behind with five points (2 goals and 1 point). Goalkeeper Erika Christensen holds an 1.65 Goals Against Average with 43 saves in 13 contests played this season.

The 12-match series with Wofford is evened up at six after the Catamounts reeled off three consecutive victories. The Catamounts have shutout the Terriers in the last three matches and have not allowed a Wofford goal since Oct. 2, 2005. Before the streak began in 2006, Wofford led in the series, 6-3.
