Cullowhee, N.C. -
It has been announced today that Western Carolina is ranked 10th in the Southeast Region in the most recent National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Women's Division I rankings, one of the most prestigious polls in women's collegiate soccer.
The Catamounts are only in their third season of varsity women's soccer and own a 12-4 overall record. Western is 6-2 in the Southern Conference, a half game behind league-leader Georgia Southern (6-1-1). Western vaulted into the rankings after claiming wins over 2000 NCAA Tournament teams UNC Greensboro and Furman, as well as traditional conference power Davidson.
"It is a great honor for our young team to be in the company of such established programs," said head coach Debbie Hensley. "I am so proud of our team's success so far. However, we still have a lot to accomplish and hopefully this is just the beginning."
North Carolina, the nation's top-ranked team, leads the way in the Southeast Region, followed by Clemson (ranked 12th nationally), Florida (15th), Wake Forest (21st) and Florida State (also receiving votes). Georgia, Miami, North Carolina State, Charlotte and WCU round out the Southeast top 10.
Western Carolina has three games remaining in the regular season, including home games versus East Tennessee State (Oct. 26 at 4 pm) and Appalachian State (Oct. 26 at 2 pm). The Catamounts will close the 2001 campaign at Georgia State on Nov. 3 (2 pm). The Southern Conference Championship will be hosted by Furman in Greenville, S.C., Nov. 8-10.
