Cullowhee, N.C. -
Around 35 supporters of Western Carolina athletics attended Wednesday afternoon's Catamount Coaches' Luncheon at the Cats' Den. WCU head football coach Kent Briggs and head women's soccer coach Tammy DeCesare each spoke about their respective teams, with Briggs showing highlights from last week's game at Chattanooga and looking forward to this weekend's Homecoming opponent, The Citadel.
Each week, the Catamount Coaches' Luncheon events will take place at the newly remodeled Cats' Den, located in Brown Cafeteria on the WCU campus. The Cats' Den is a leisure space for students and the WCU community which is decorated with Catamount sports memorabilia and photos of past Western legends.
The luncheon, catered by Aramark, will feature a buffet-style lunch beginning at 11:45 am and will last until approximately 1:00 pm. Head coaches from WCU's athletic programs will be the keynote speakers at each event offering insight into their seasons and "X's and O's" from their respective sport, as well as answering questions from those in attendance.
With four regular season matches remaining this season, the women's soccer team is in a position to make a run at hosting a first-round match in the Southern Conference tournament. WCU travels to Georgia Southern this Friday afternoon before returning home for its final home match of the season on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 4:00 pm against Davidson. The Catamounts, currently sixth, need to finish among the top eight to make the post-season with the top four teams hosting first-round matches.
The Catamount football team hosts The Citadel in conference play on Saturday afternoon at E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field for Homecoming. WCU has dropped three-straight to the Bulldogs including last year's 17-14 overtime affair in Charleston, but has been victorious in nine of the last 14 overall meetings in the series. Festivities start with the Catamount Walk at approximately 10:00 am from the Hinds University Center and the bell tower, with kickoff slated for 1:00 pm.
Next Wednesday, Oct. 24, Briggs will be joined by Western head volleyball coach Stephanie Dragan to discuss her squad's push for the post-season, as well as head cross country/track & field coach Danny Williamson whose squads will host the 2007 SoCon Cross Country Championships Oct. 27 in Cullowhee.
There is an open invitation to everyone in the surrounding communities, but an RSVP is requested by the Friday prior to the next event to allow proper preparations to be made. The cost of the luncheon is $7.00 per person. The series will continue through mid-November before reconvening in January amidst basketball season.
