Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's soccer team kicks off Homecoming weekend with a critical pair of Southern Conference matches at the Catamount Athletic Complex.

WCU (5-5-4, 2-2-2) will host the College of Charleston (9-4-1), who sits atop the Southern Conference with a 5-1 record, on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and The Citadel (5-9-0, 2-4-0) at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday. Fans will be treated to giveaways every five minutes of clock time on Friday, and can help support the newly formed "Thunder Cats" student fan support group for soccer. Following the match, fans will want to stick around for Spirit Night 2009.

On Sunday, the soccer team will host The Citadel on Senior Day as WCU will recognize its nine seniors in a special pre-match ceremony. Last weekend, the Catamounts dropped a pair of games to UNC Greensboro (3-0) and Elon (1-0). This weekend will be the last full weekend of matches at the Catamount Athletic Complex.

Senior Rachael Shomper leads the Catamounts in all three offensive scoring categories with goals scored, assists and points. Through 14 contests, the Millersburg, Pa. native has tallied three goals and assists for a total of nine points.

The College of Charleston comes into the weekend with a pair of shutout wins over Georgia Southern and Davidson. The Cougars have won seven out of their last eight matches with their lone loss coming to Furman on Oct. 4. The Cougars are led by a trio of players who have combined for 24 points. Alyssa Bearden (4 goals, 8 points), Annie Pease (4 goals, 8 points) and Hannah Gmerek (3 goals, 2 assists, 8 points) have led the strong offensive CoC front, which has tallied 20 goals this year. Goalkeeper Sarah Wiggers has 45 saves with four shutouts in 11 games played this season.

Western Carolina holds the advantage over the Cougars with an 8-3-2 lead in the all-time series. The Cats picked up a 1-0 win over the Cougars on Sept. 28, 2008 in Charleston, S.C. Western Carolina has not dropped a match with the College of Charleston since a 2-1 heartbreaker in double-overtime on Nov. 2, 2003. The Citadel enters this weekend 2-4 in conference play after falling to Davidson (1-0), but picking up a 2-1 win over Georgia Southern. Forward Amy Loughran leads the Bulldog offense after tallying seven goals and four assists for a team-leading 18 points. Goalkeeper Whitney Nave holds a 1.62 Goals Against Average and has collected a league-leading 63 saves in 14 contests played this season.

The Catamounts have never lost to The Citadel in the previous eight meetings between the two schools. Last season, WCU beat the Bulldogs 6-0 in Charleston, S.C. last season. In the last three matches, WCU has outscored The Citadel, 14-1.
