Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's soccer team returns to the friendly confines of the Catamount Athletic Complex for the Catamount Classic this weekend. WCU will kick off the classic with Ohio Valley Conference foe Jacksonville State on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
The Catamount Classic features three other teams. The tournament opens Friday at 5:00 p.m. as Southern Conference foe Elon will play UNC Asheville. On Sunday, the Elon will play Jacksonville State at 12:00 p.m. before the tournament finale featuring WCU and UNC Asheville at 2:30 p.m.
The Catamounts (2-3-1) are returning home after a four-game road trip which featured four regionally-ranked programs. Goalkeeper Caitlin Williams etched a career-high 14 saves in a 0-0 draw with Dayton on Sept. 6 in the Hurricane Cup in Miami, Fla. Rachael Shomper scored her second goal of the season in the first half against Tennessee on Sunday. The goal gave the Catamounts a 1-0 lead over the regionally-ranked Lady Vols for 26 minutes. Shomper's goal was her ninth of her four-year career at WCU.
Jacksonville State (5-2-0) enters Friday's match with a three-game win streak. In the five victories this season, JSU has shutout their opponents. Their only losses this season were to Mercer and Alabama.
Freshman goalkeeper Ali Koening has notched three straight wins, all shutouts, 14 saves and has a .933 goals against average since taking over the starting role for the injured Christine Cunningham.
Offensively, the Gamecocks are led by Amber DeLaney who has five goals for a total of 10 points this season. Chelsea Pelletier earned Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week honors after scoring three goals and tallying an assist in wins over Alabama A&M and Nicholls State last weekend.
