Cullowhee, N.C. -
On the heels of taking home ETSU Invitational Defensive MVP award over the weekend, Western Carolina freshman goalkeeper Caitlin Williams was named the Southern Conference Player of the Week today, selected by the conference office. Williams allowed only a single penalty kick goal in two matches this past week, making 10 saves and shutting out Stetson University on Friday to record her second career shut out.
On the season, the freshman from Pendleton, S.C., has 33 saves, placing her in the third spot in the Southern Conference rankings for the season, behind two upperclassmen. She is the highest ranked freshman keeper in the SoCon in terms of saves and save percentage.
The goal allowed against ETSU on Sunday was the first second-half goal that Williams has allowed in the six games she's been in, a total of over 560 minutes of play. She is currently fourth in the SoCon with a 0.79 goals-against average, and her two shut outs place her in a tie for third place in the conference.
Her selection marks the first Player of the Week honor for the Catamounts since Shannon Fowkes won the award the week of October 10, 2006, and the fifth time in the eight-year history of the program that a Western player has been honored by the conference.
Williams and the Catamounts will travel to Boiling Springs, N.C., Friday evening to take on Big South member Gardner-Webb. Kickoff for the match is set for 7:00 p.m.
