CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina women's soccer forward Kelly Pannell was named College Sports Madness Women's Soccer Southern Conference Player of the Week as announced Tuesday by College Sports Madness.
Pannell, a sophomore from Sales Creek, Tenn., scored all three of Western Carolina's goals this past weekend in the Catamounts' 2-0 win over Western Kentucky and 1-1 double overtime tie with East Tennessee State University (ETSU). She leads the team for the season with four goals and is tied for third in the Southern Conference.
Pannell also paces the team, and ranks second in the SoCon, in assists with three. In the 2-0 win over Western Kentucky University Friday, Pannell scored both goals in the first eight minutes of the first half. In her first goal, she scored off a throw in by teammate Markie-Lynn Studnicky. Pannell notched the first unassisted goal of her career when Catamount junior Caitlyn Bradham's shot was saved by the Hilltopper goalie but it bounced off her hands. Pannell noted the fumble and sent the ball into the back of the net.
Pannell struck again on Sunday. Down 0-1 at the half, Western Carolina went on the attack against ETSU. In the middle of the second half, junior Madison Lee placed the ball into the box off a corner kick. Pannell was there for the header, sailing it past the Buccaneer defenders and the ETSU goalie.
Western Carolina's last four goals, in as many games, have all been scored by Pannell.
The Catamounts head on the road Friday facing future Southern Conference member Mercer at 7 p.m.
