Cullowhee, N.C. - The defending Southern Conference Tournament Champion Western Carolina Catamount women's soccer team opened its quest for a title defense on Saturday evening at the on-campus practice Charles Schrader Field.

Following team meetings in the morning, WCU fifth-year head coach Tammy DeCesare through a barrage of fitness training at the returning players and newcomers alike.

The team will continue preseason fitness training on Sunday morning in the first of two sessions, reconvening at 3:00 pm for the first soccer drill-oriented practice.

Western will have nine days in which to prepare for its lone preseason scrimmage as the Catamounts will host perennial soccer power, Charlotte, at the Catamount Athletic Complex on Aug. 18 - kickoff is at 5:00 pm. WCU opens its regular season at home on Friday, Aug. 21 by hosting Gardner-Webb at 7:00 pm.
