Cullowhee, N.C. - With the day beginning with breakfast at 7:00 am followed by condition testing and training at 9, the Western Carolina women's soccer team took to the pitch for the first time this preseason on Friday morning at the practice facility on Schrader Field.

The morning sprint ladder fitness test was followed with on-field workouts in the first of two practices slated for Friday. Drills included full-field work, as well as three-on-three, defensive possession sessions.

The Catamounts only have two seniors on this year's squad in Buki Baruwa and Arlan Whittle, who was a 2006 Southern Conference All-tournament team selection as a defender. There are 10 juniors, including a pair of transfers (Kelly Estes, N.C. State, Hilary Holder, Columbus State). The remaining 21 roster spots are filled with sophomores and freshmen for the DeCesare-led squad.

Western returns three of its top five point producers from the 2007 season. Junior Bri Cunningham was tied for the team lead with nine points (four goals, one assist) a year ago, while classmate Shannon Fowkes (seven points; three goals, one assist) and red-shirt junior Rachel Shomper (six points; three goals) are also back in the lineup.

Western Carolina will get its first test for the 2008 season next Monday, Aug. 11 as the Catamounts welcome Big East foe, Cincinnati, to the Catamount Athletic Complex for a preseason scrimmage. The Catamounts and Bearcats will hit the pitch at 5:30 pm on Monday evening. Admission is free.

WCU has five additional training sessions scheduled from Saturday until Monday night's scrimmage.
